Reason Triumphs at the Supreme Court: A Historic Win for Kids & Parents!

On June 18, 2025, the U.S. Supreme Court delivered a landmark victory in United States v. Skrmetti, a case where the Child & Parental Rights Campaign (CPRC) played a significant role. In a 6-3 decision, the Court upheld Tennessee’s Senate Bill 1, ruling that state bans on puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and surgeries for adolescents do not constitute unjust discrimination. This means states can now legally protect children from irreversible medical interventions nationwide—a monumental win for reason, parental rights, and child safety!
The Impact of This Win
This victory’s power lies in the Court’s reasoning. The Justices made clear that bans like SB1 are driven by a legitimate need to protect public health, and are not discriminatory. The Court rejected claims that such laws require “heightened scrutiny,” holding that transgender status is not an immutable characteristic.
Justice Amy Coney Barrett’s concurrence affirmed what we’ve long said: invented gender categories cannot be elevated to protected classes under the Constitution. Justice Clarence Thomas, citing CPRC’s amicus brief on behalf of Partners for Ethical Care and parents, highlighted detransitioner voices as a key reason states question minors’ capacity to consent for these treatments: “The 'voices of detransitioners' provide States with an additional reason to question whether children are providing informed consent to the interventions." This decision is a seismic shift. States are now empowered to prioritize children’s well-being and parental authority, setting a precedent that will echo across America.
