Biden Administration Issues Title IX Regulations: Parental Rights at Stake, The Stream, John Stonestreet & Heather Peterson

In a detailed analysis for The Stream, John Stonestreet and Heather Peterson discuss how the Biden administration's recent overhaul of Title IX regulations has raised significant concerns among parental rights advocates. The revised rules, which expand the definition of "sex" to include "gender identity," are seen as a direct challenge to parental authority and the protection of children's well-being.

Parental Consent Undermined

Vernadette Broyles, President and General Counsel of the Child & Parental Rights Campaign (CPRC), highlights that the new regulations permit schools to support a minor's social transition—including changes in name and pronouns—without notifying or obtaining consent from parents. Broyles warns that this approach could lead to government agencies, such as Child Protective Services, being used to sideline parental involvement, funneling children toward gender-affirming counselors and medical interventions without family input.

Health Risks and Privacy Concerns

The regulations also raise alarms about the physical and emotional health risks associated with gender-affirming treatments. For instance, the FDA has reported that puberty blockers can cause brain swelling and vision loss, with long-term cognitive effects still under study. Cross-sex hormones are known to result in permanent sterilization. Moreover, the inclusion of gender identity in Title IX protections threatens the privacy and safety of girls, as it could allow biological males access to female-only spaces and sports, undermining the original intent of Title IX to protect women's opportunities.

Call to Action

Broyles urges concerned individuals to voice their objections to these regulations by submitting unique comments to the Federal Register before the implementation deadline. The CPRC provides resources and prompts to assist parents, educators, and community leaders in articulating their concerns effectively. This proactive engagement is crucial to safeguarding parental rights and ensuring the well-being of children in educational settings.
