In a report by Abby Liebing for The Western Journal, Wendell and Maria Perez of Clay County, Florida, have filed a lawsuit against Clay County District Schools, alleging that school officials conducted secret gender identity counseling sessions with their 12-year-old daughter without parental knowledge or consent. The parents claim these undisclosed meetings contributed to their daughter's two suicide attempts on school grounds.

Secret Counseling and Parental Exclusion

According to the Perezes, school counselors held private sessions with their daughter, during which she was encouraged to adopt a male name and pronouns. The school did not inform the parents of these meetings, citing concerns that the Perezes' Catholic Christian beliefs would not support their daughter's gender transition. The parents assert that their daughter had not exhibited any signs of gender confusion at home.

Legal Action and Allegations

Represented by Vernadette Broyles, President and General Counsel of the Child & Parental Rights Campaign (CPRC), the Perezes have initiated legal proceedings against the school district. The lawsuit alleges that the school violated the parents' fundamental rights by:​

  • Failing to notify them about their daughter's mental health issues
  • Conducting secret meetings that affirmed a male identity for their daughter
  • Encouraging the use of a male name and pronouns without parental consent
  • Blaming the suicide attempts on the parents' religious beliefs

Broyles emphasizes that the case centers on the rights of parents to raise their children according to their beliefs without undue interference from the state.
